Momentum Scotland

Momentum

Momentum (formerly Rehab Scotland) enables and empowers disabled and excluded people throughout Scotland to identify and achieve their life goals.

By developing and delivering innovative, high quality services, Momentum promotes equal chances, equal choices and equal futures for more than 1000 people every year.

Brain injury service

Momentum's brain injury service in the Borders provides support to adults and children with a brain injury, and to their families and carers. Based in Kelso (formerly Galashiels) our small team offers two programmes.

Integrate

Integrate helps adults and children who have sustained a brain injury to live independently and reintegrate into their communities.

Clients learn how to manage the effects of their brain injury, with one-to-one support and a range of information, including a counselling service. Support is also given to families and carers and an outreach service covers 1800 square miles within the Borders.

  • Assessment of needs
  • One-to-one support
  • Information & Counselling
  • Skills Development
  • Social Evenings (third Thursday of every month)

Two support groups based in Berwickshire and the Central Borders meet monthly and give clients the opportunity to meet other people with head injuries in their local communities or in our premises in Kelso.

We offer access to counsellors with a wide range of expertise in legal advice, clinical psychology, social welfare advice, person centred counselling and welfare rights (third Thursday of every month.

Integrate also offers new clients the opportunity to gain self-confidence, social integration and new skills through Information Technology, cookery and numeracy courses, offered in partnership with Borders College.

Pathways

Pathways delivers specialist training and support for adults with brain injury who want to return to employment and further education.

A full-time vocational rehabilitation programme, Pathways supports clients to return to work, further education or training following brain injury. Clients take part in group and one-to-one sessions which cover:

  • Personal development
  • Work skills
  • Healthy living
  • Managing the effects of brain injury
  • Information & technology training
  • Vocational exploration and job seeking skills

Clients are assisted to identify and set practical, solid goals for the future and staff work with them to ensure that a concrete plan is in place to achieve their goals.

Pathways clients are supported to undertake work experience placements, which are an essential step in allowing them to transfer the skills they have learnt to the working environment. Placements may be full or part time and can last for several weeks.

Clients are supported throughout by a job coach. As their confidence grows, the clients are supported to apply for jobs or further education and training courses. Momentum job coaches also provide a vital link between clients and employers, providing specialist brain injury awareness guidance to placement companies and their staff. Once clients are working, Pathways staff offer a continued period of aftercare to ensure a positive transition to the working environment.
