REGISTERING YOUR CLASS 3 VEHICLE
It is important that users of Class 3 powered wheelchairs and scooters register their vehicle with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and display the free tax disc in order to avoid a fine.
Class 3 powered wheelchair and scooters (those that have a maximum speed of between 4mph and 8mph) have to be registered with the DVLA and display a current free tax disc. It is required by law to have lights, indicators, a horn, rear-view mirrors and rear reflectors. It is not allowed to travel on motorways, cycle lanes or bus lanes. Generally it is larger than a class2 vehicle, which is not allowed on the roads apart from when crossing them
There is no registration fee and to register a Class 3 vehicle you need to complete form V55/5 (for used vehicles) or V55/4 (for new vehicles) Forms can be obtained from your dealer or request a form from DVLA by calling 0870 240 0010-you will be asked your postcode. When you return the application form you will need to submit documentation confirming the keepers name and address and the age of the vehicle. · Class 3 powered wheelchairs and scooters are exempt from driving licence requirements.
· Class 3 powered wheelchairs and scooters do not need to display number plates
· Class 3 powered wheelchairs and scooters will be issued with a nil duty (free) tax disc which must be displayed on the vehicle and renew the tax disc annually
