Woodlands - The Hirsel, Coldsteam

Woodland walks, picnic area, lake, magnificent trees, courtyard museum, restaurant, childrens play area. Open all year. The Black (Crooks) route (1 mile) follows the quiet estate roads by the lake and many interesting trees. It continues along a fairly level woodland path, with a short steep section past the walled garden. Ability Centre members recommend following the route in a clockwise direction to avoid going upwards on the short steep section.
Look out for otters, teal, swans, dragonflies, bats on the lake. Over 100 varieties of tree. Red Admiral and Peacock butterflies on flowers by the walled garden wall.

Museum in courtyard includes information on wildlife, estate activities such as forestry, farming and domestic life in the past. There is also a Geology exhibition with exhibits of rocks and gemstones. Here there is a video for sale of the Hirsel Lake with pictures of otters and a kingfisher.
