Helpful Hints

Helpful hints for people with sight problems

In the home:

Use contrasting colour tape round sockets and light switches.
Devise simple labels for foodstuffs such as one rubber band for tinned soup, two bands for tinned fruit, 3 bands for tinned vegetables etc.
When describing positions of food on a plate think of it as a clock face e.g. peas at six o'clock, and place contrasting coloured food side by side.
Use dark and light coloured chopping boards e.g. potatoes on dark board.
Use back burners on cooker rather than front.
Use lighters rather than matches.
Use fluorescent ' bumpons' on dials such as cooker, washing machine, iron, TV/video controls so it easier to find regularly used settings.
In the kitchen use talking scales, talking microwave, easy to see timers and talking clocks.
Ask your family or friends to record on tape your favourite recipes.
Use bright lights particularly on the stairs and in the kitchen.
Avoid patterns on bedspreads, tablecloths etc. Anything laid on these surfaces is very difficult to find.

In the home continued:
Use liquid level indicator on cups, jugs, and pans to avoid overfilling with liquids.
Use contrasting paint colours on walls and doors to make them stand out.
Mark edge of steps with black and yellow striped tape.
Remember there is a free gas safety check for people with a visual impairment.
Keep equipment in the same place.
Avoid storage space that is high or difficult to reach.
Discourage friends and family from moving anything in your home.
